About Us

Lochaber Showstoppers, formed in 1993, is a not for profit community musical theatre group based in Fort William. It was established with the aim of encouraging community access to and involvement in musical theatre within Lochaber, particularly amongst young people.
Although run by volunteers, ultimately we work very hard to achieve the highest possible standards in all areas of our productions, and we strive to improve and develop from show to show.

History of Showstoppers

Lochaber Showstoppers was formed in May 1993 by founding members Douglas Yule, Jackie Wright and Jo Cowan. These individuals got together and recognised that there was no other dramatic/musical society in the area and were keen to find out if there was an interest locally. An advert was placed in the local newspapers for anyone interested to attend a meeting in St Mary’s Primary School and, to their delight, more than 40 people turned up. Encouraged by this, a decision was taken to present Oklahoma! in the November of that year. Nairn MacArthur was appointed as Director, the late Heather Moore as Musical Director and Liz Milroy as choreographer.
Oklahoma was a great success locally with almost 2,500 local people coming to watch the 3 evening performance at the Nevis Centre  – this was on the back of a serious marketing campaign (something that Showstoppers works very hard at). A decision was taken to deliver a main show each year and, if enough interest followed, a Christmas performance.

Jekyll and Hyde

Our shows have ranged in style and content – musicals from old favourites Rogers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma!) and Gilbert and Sullivan (The Mikado), to more modern composers such as Stephen Schwartz (The Baker’s Wife) and Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll and Hyde).  (Explore our Past Shows Pages – containing show synopses, photos, cast & crew information and more.)
The pantomimes we have performed at Christmas-time have always been penned by a member of Showstoppers, including some of our youth members.  We’ve been very lucky to be able to tailor a show not only to the talents of the members, but also to the funny bones of our audiences.
As well as staged productions we have performed at many community and fundraising events throughout Fort William over the years.
